Tom was born and raised in the Urbana-Champaign community. He left briefly to attend Furman University, but returned after graduation to join the family business. Over the past 30 years, he has directed his emphasis toward insurance sales and real estate appraisals.

Tom and his wife, Mary Ann, a teacher for the Urbana Schools, live in Urbana, where they raised their three sons. Tom is an active member of the local community, volunteering his time, and is involved as a member in a variety of civic organizations. These include the Urbana Park District, Urbana Parks Foundation, C-U Schools Foundation and Urbana Rotary. He holds an enduring enthusiasm for coaching local youth sports.
